The Argentine Access to Public Information Agency (“AAIP”, by its Spanish acronym) and over 60 data protection authorities worldwide issued a joint statement expressing their concern about artificial intelligence (“AI”) systems capable of generating realistic images and videos of identifiable individuals without their knowledge or consent.
The authorities warn that recent developments in AI have enabled the creation of harmful content, such as defamatory material and non-consensual intimate imagery, and express particular concern about the impact on minors and other vulnerable groups.
In this context, the authorities set out a series of guiding principles, including the implementation of robust safeguards to prevent the misuse of personal data, transparency regarding the functioning of AI systems, the implementation of effective mechanisms to request the removal of harmful content, and the adoption of enhanced measures to protect minors.
Finally, the authorities highlighted the need for a coordinated response to these risks and expressed their commitment to cooperate on enforcement, public policy and awareness initiatives, aimed at mitigating the risks associated with the misuse of these technologies.
