Argentina’s Agency for Access to Public Information (AAIP) and Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of personal data protection. While the agreement is non-binding, it lays a solid foundation for closer institutional collaboration, encouraging mutual support, the sharing of regulatory experience, and coordinated efforts in supervision and enforcement.
The MoU includes several initiatives, such as the exchange of experiences in regulation and compliance, the sharing of information on ongoing investigations, and the potential for conducting joint inspections. It also provides for mutual support in investigative and supervisory processes, as well as the joint development of education, training, and research programs.
The ANPD emphasized the strategic significance of this partnership, highlighting the longstanding political, cultural, and economic connections between Argentina and Brazil, as well as Argentina’s role as Brazil’s third-largest trading partner in the region. The authority further noted that collaboration with the AAIP reinforces the international credibility of Brazil’s General Data Protection Law (LGPD) and contributes to broader regulatory harmonization throughout South America.
Overall, the Memorandum establishes a framework for technical and regulatory cooperation between both authorities, with potential to shape regional approaches to international data transfers and the governance of artificial intelligence.
