During the XII International Congress on Personal Data Protection, held in Bogotá, the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce, national data protection authority, announced the government’s plan to reform Statutory Act 1581 of 2012.
The proposed reform seeks to update the current regime in light of data-driven business models, cross-border data flows, and artificial intelligence, aiming to align Colombia with the highest international standards on data protection.
Key changes include introducing new legal bases for data processing, expanding the scope of the law, and revising rules on the processing of minors’ data.
The bill of law is expected to be submitted to the Congress of the Colombian Republic in the coming days.
